What:  A play in French, performed for teenagers.

A note from the director:

 

Dear students,

You are going to watch a play called La Chambre de Jean-Paul.  It is completely in French, but don't fold your arms, slump back in your chair and think you are not going to understand any of it!

We know loads about producing theatre in foreign languages for schools.  We understand that you will be a bit worried about following the story, but the script contains lots of words and phrases which you have come across in class. 

The actors are native French speakers who have come to the UK to perform for you!  They will speak slowly and clearly and we have included lots of repetition.

We are not expecting you to understand every single word, but by picking out the words you know and watching the action, gestures and facial expressions, you will have no problem understanding what is going on - trust us!  In fact you will be amazed how much French you actually know.  So sit back, relax and remember this play is here to help you - not frighten you.


The story:

The play is set in Jean-Paul's bedroom.

 Jean-Paul is 16 years old but unlike his mates, he doesn't have a girlfriend.

 He really cannot understand why he is single.  He has gone with a few girls in the past but it has never lasted longer than a few weeks.

 Jean-Paul knows he can't afford to be too particular but there is one girl, Angélique, whom he really likes.  But he is way too shy to approach her and he is sure she wouldn't be interested in him.  Jean-Paul needs to stand out from the crowd - he needs to be noticed - he needs an identity.  The trouble is he doesn't realise this!

Then one evening, to Jean-Paul's complete amazement, his bedroom window opens and in bursts "Fashion Girl".  She's a sort of free advice service for single teenagers and she immediately takes over.  Jean-Paul is about to get a completely new look - whether he likes it or not.  But she is just the beginning.  Jean-Paul's evening is about to get even more bizarre....
