Why Study PE?

PE is a National Curriculum subject that all students, regardless of religion and culture must take part in, by law, in England.

For Good Health it is recommended that all children aged two and over get a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise every day of the week, with 90 minutes preferred. George Dixon offer two hours of PE per week in curriculum time for every child. Unfortunately even with this time, many students today get far less than even the baseline amount of daily exercise out of school hours. Too many students spend many of their leisure hours in front of a television or computer. To support parents getting their children active the PE department offers up to five hours of activity for each year group afterschool.

 Benefits of Exercise for Students

For our students exercise should be part of their everyday life. For some students sports participation may not be their goal, but when they eat right and stay active, they will benefit into adult life. Regular activity helps our students to:

  • Keep their weight within a healthy range
  • Increase strength and stamina for everyday tasks
  • Lower their risk of illness and developing diabetes
  • Keep blood pressure and cholesterol within a healthy range
  • Build strong bones
  • Manage stress and decrease anxiety and depression
  • Improve confidence
  • Sleep soundly, improving daytime focus and attention span for lessons

What will I study?

The  PE National Curriculum is varied and balanced. This way students gain a variety of skills and knowledge using a range of sports and activities as a process. Students Study the following key areas:

  • Outwitting the Opponent 43% (rugby, football, basketball, rounders and cricket)
  • Exercising Safely and Effectively 25% (Health Related Fitness)
  • Accurate Replication 15% (Gymnastics and Trampoline)
  • Performing at Maximum levels. 15% (Athletics)

Academic PE

Not everyone likes being sporty, so for this reason we develop the whole person and not just the sports person. To do this we take literacy as being a core part of what we teach in PE. Explaining key terminology and evaluating performance in PE are very vital areas developing student communication. Within Exercising Safely and Effectively the students study Health Related Fitness. In this unit they experience and write about how exercise effects the Cardiovascular System and learn about the muscles and bones in the body. In Years 10/11 all students can gain Sports Leadership.

In key stage 4 students can choose to follow BTEC Sport or GCSE PE.

Extra Curricular Activities

Intra-Form competitions are run covering a range of sports and activities including crafts and quiz based topics during form time as well as a whole school sports day. The school enters Inter-School teams in Football, rugby, basketball, athletics, cricket, rounders, table tennis, indoor rowing and badminton.

The department staff all play sport to a high level and have their own specialism's. From time to time we bring in specialist coaches these have included wrestling, judo, dance and climbing.

The school runs approximately 30 Extra Curricular clubs a week. These range from Football to trampoline and vigor boarding (alternative skateboarding).

Many Festivals take place either entered by the school or we run them for the primary schools using Sports Leaders.  These range from Football to Triathlon and Indoor Rowing.

Expectations:

All pupils are required to participate in PE lessons except by prior agreement in writing and due to exceptional circumstances. Students not participating are still required to bring full PE kit to the lesson.
