19 Jul 2010  Year 9s become teachers

Tagged in: MFL /

For the past few weeks students in Year 9 have been going down to City Road Primary School. They have been working with Year 3 children, teaching them Spanish.

So far they have done basic greetings and numbers. The children really seem to be picking it up well and they are really enjoying themselves.

GD students have been working hard between lessons to plan their sessions and make all the resources they need to be able to teach the Year 3 children. Many of them said they have found teaching is harder than they thought it was, but they are enjoying themselves anyway!

Las Hogueras de Alicante

The Bonfires of Alicante

The traditional midsummer party in Spain takes place in the evening of June 23. It is called Saint John's Night. In the city of Alicante, they celebrate Las Hogueras (The Bonfires)on this night since 1928.

La fiesta tradicional del solsticio de verano en España tiene lugar la noche del 23 de junio. Se llama la Noche de San Juan. En la ciudad de Alicante, celebran Las Hogueras esa noche desde 1928.

The ninots (puppets) that will burn in the bonfires are designed and created during the whole year. They are authentic works of art that simbolize the brevity of time: on that magical night, they will be finally consumed by fire on the beach.

Los ninots que se quemarán en las hogueras se diseñan y se crean durante todo el año. Son auténticas obras de arte que simbolizan la brevedad del tiempo: en esa noche mágica, serán finalmente consumidas por el fuego en la playa.

The ninots usually represent celebrities, politicians, etc. They often show humour and sarcasm towards current issues.

Los ninots normalmente representan celebridades, políticos, etc. A menudo presentan humor y sarcarmo hacia temas de actualidad.

Every year during Las Hogueras an award is granted to the most beautiful girl wearing a traditional costume. This girl is called in Catalan the Bellea del Foc (the Fire Beauty). Awards are also granted to the best ninots, that will be the only ones spared from burning.

Todos los años, durante Las Hogueras, un premio se concede a la chica más bella vestida al estilo tradicional. Esta chica se llama en catalán la Bellea del Foc. También se conceden premios a los mejores ninots, que serán los únicos que se salvarán del fuego.

After the bonfire night, the festivities extend for a whole week full of fireworks, party, energy and celebrations.

Después de la noche de las hogueras, las fiestas se extienden durante toda una semana llena de fuegos artificiales, fiesta, energía y celebraciones.

Y la presion que sientes
Espera en ti, tu gente!

14 Dec 2009  What are Christmas traditions in Spain?

Tagged in: Not tagged

Today we learnt about Christmas traditions in Spain: how families celebrate Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, who the Three Kings are and why they are so special for children and how houses are decorated. Here is a video on Christmas in Granada, a city in the south of Spain.

We also discovered what people normally eat during these festivities. Take a look at the meaning of "turron", a typical Spanish sweet.

There are many traditional Christmas songs and carols in Spanish. Here is a link to Christina Aguilera's Spanish and English version on Silent Night / Noche de Paz (night of peace):
