Communicating with the Past

In October 2008, KWN students from George Dixon School had the privelige of interviewing the late Jill Balcon, then in her 85th year. She was in Birmingham as a guest of the city that evening at the first Into the Light event - the closing night of the Hello Digital Festival, which celebrated the life and career of her father, the Birmingham-born-and-bred film producer, Sir Michael Balcon. This film, completed by our students shortly before her death, was shown as part of a tribute evening at the second Into the Light event, in 2009.

KWN (Kid Witness News) is a global video education program supported by Panasonic, with the aim of boosting creativity and communication skills and fostering teamwork through video production by children. In 2006, the year's team took as their theme peoples impressions of our home city. You may spot one or two familiar faces!

BSF design workshop

BSF, or Building Schools for the Future was originally conceived as the country's biggest ever school buildings investment programme. The aim was to rebuild or renew nearly every secondary school in England. This July the new government radically scaled back the scheme, but George Dixon's plans remain unaffected. During the early planning stage of the scheme, we invited in Sabine Gollner from It's About Time Productions to work with a group of students on their ideas for what our new school design should be.

I Wish...

Sami Cass Darweish in Year 10 was chosen to represent George Dixon and England at the International INDIE Young Leaders' Conference in Amsterdam in October 2009. Over 150 video-makers between the ages of 15 and 25 took part in the professionally led Stranger Academy workshops and presented their work to an audience of experts and other video fans. Among those was George Dixon's own Young Leader Sami, who worked together to explore the fine points of video making and produced a one-minute video on the theme of inclusion & diversity.

Back to backs

In the summer of 2009, Mrs Fergusson, Mr Golden and Miss Lund took some year 8 students to the 'Back to Backs' museum in Hurst street, Birmingham. This is the film we made of our visit.
